Long-Term Pain Management
Pain is a curious and powerful phenomenon. It cannot exist without a living being, yet it can completely dominate our lives. How can something that doesn’t exist on its own have such a huge impact?
Our understanding of pain works well for short-term injuries. You step on something sharp — say, a Lego brick — it hurts, you move your foot away, and the pain fades. Your body is protecting you from tissue damage. But what happens when pain lingers for months or even years?
Chronic pain is different. Often, tissue damage is no longer present, yet the nervous system continues to fire pain signals. Over time, your body’s pain system becomes “wired” to stay on alert. Because we naturally equate pain with harm, anxiety can build — feeding an overactive nervous system and amplifying the pain experience.
